12 <p>This is a shuffle variant of normal Chess, which preserves the
13 possibility to do sort of conventional castling, by starting
14 Rooks always in he corner, and the King on the central files.
15 When played on an Internet Chess Server, the King can also start
16 on the d-file, and you can castle from there. This adds nothing
17 to the game, though, it just produces mirror images of other
18 start positions. So in local mode XBoard does not bother to do

394 <h3>Pawn peculiarities</h3>
397 <li>Pawns capture differently from how they move (straight
398 move, diagonal capture).</li>
400 <li>Pawns can move two squares straight ahead from their
401 initial position, provided they are not blocked.</li>
403 <li>On the move immediately after such a double push, they can
404 be captured en passant by another Pawn, as if they had only
405 moved 1 square ahead.</li>
407 <li>Pawns promote to another (non-royal) piece of choice when
408 they reach last rank.</li>
413 <p>A King that has not moved before can move two squares in the
414 direction of a Rook that has not moved before, in which case that
415 Rook is moved to the square the King skipped over. This is only
416 allowed if all squares between King and Rook are empty, when the
417 King is not in check on the square it came from, and would not be
418 in check on any of the squares it skipped over.</p>
420 <h3>General rules</h3>
423 <li>It is not allowed to expose your King to check.</li>
425 <li>The game is won by checkmating the opponent's King.</li>
427 <li>Stalemate (no legal moves, but not in check) is a
431 <h3>Differences with FIDE</h3>
433 <p>The Queen, Bishops and Knights are randomly shuffled on the
434 back rank in the opening setup.</p>
436 <h3>Strategy issues</h3>
438 <p>It is not possible to force checkmate on a bare King with just
439 a single Bishop or Knight (in addition to your own King). Two
440 Knights cannot do that either.</p>
442 <p>Bishops are confined to squares of a single color. Having
443 Bishops on both colors compensates this weakness, and is worth an
444 extra 0.5 on top of their added value.</p>
