377 <h3>Pawn peculiarities</h3>
380 <li>Pawns capture differently from how they move (diagonal
381 move, straight capture).</li>
383 <li>Pawns can move two squares <i>diagonally</i> ahead from
384 their initial position, provided they are not blocked.</li>
386 <li>On the move immediately after such a double push, they can
387 be captured en passant by another Pawn, as if they had only
388 moved 1 square ahead.</li>
390 <li>A diagonal move to the square skipped by the previous Pawn
391 move is thus <b>not</b> an e.p. capture.</li>
393 <li>Pawns promote to another (non-royal) piece of choice when

399 <p>A King that has not moved before can move two squares in the
400 direction of a Rook that has not moved before, in which case that
401 Rook is moved to the square the King skipped over. This is only
402 allowed if all squares between King and Rook are empty, when the
403 King is not in check on the square it came from, and would not be
404 in check on any of the squares it skipped over.</p>
406 <h3>General rules</h3>
409 <li>It is not allowed to expose your King to check.</li>
411 <li>The game is won by checkmating the opponent's King.</li>
413 <li>Stalemate (no legal moves, but not in check) is a

419 <p>The capture and non-capture move of the Pawns have been
420 swapped. As a result the initial double-push is also
423 <h3>Strategy issues</h3>
425 <p>It is not possible to force checkmate on a bare King with just
426 a single Bishop or Knight (in addition to your own King). Two
427 Knights cannot do that either.</p>
429 <p>Bishops are confined to squares of a single color. Having
430 Bishops on both colors compensates this weakness, and is worth an
431 extra 0.5 on top of their added value.</p>
